The Power of Love
It's Degrassi's annual year end dance, and this year the dance has a Bollywood theme. Students prepare to end the year with a night of fun and excitement. Jimmy has the perfect evening planned for his girlfriend Hazel, as they double date with Paige and Spinner the night of the dance. However, the night goes awry as Jimmy's plans slowly start to unravel. First the store he buys his Bollywood attire from accidently deliver him a woman's sari to wear for the dance instead of a traditional male kurta. Next, the fancy limo that he orders turns out to be an unkempt, messy, broken down limo instead. Next, the restaurant he takes his friends to for the evening is incidently the same resteraunt that Paige and Spinner went to in the episode I Want Candy; the restaurant where they forgot to pay the bill. Coincidently, tonight they have the same waiter that they had that day, and he charges them for tonight's meals and the meals they skipped out on paying for last time. Jimmy, short on cash and embarrassed, has to borrow money from Hazel to cover the bill. And lastly, when they finally arrive at the dance, they find that the gym has caught on fire, and the rest of the dance takes place outside of the school, as the fire martials try to extinguish the fire in the gym.
In the B plot, Sean finally gets a chance to atone for his wrongdoings this season. Mr. Simpson gives Sean an opportunity to raise his grade to a passing mark by doing extra credit work. Sean, grateful for the opportunity, yet still racked with guilt for stealing Simpson's laptop in the episode Gangsta Gangsta, confesses to Simpson about stealing the computer. Simpson is shocked and saddened at first. However, later in the night when Simpson's car engine won't start, Sean volunteers to repair it, free of charge, to make up for stealing his laptop. Simpson agrees and the two end the year on good terms.
Overall, this wasn't one of my favorite episodes. In an otherwise great season, I thought the finale was quite weak. Essentially the episode was about Jimmy trying to plan the perfect evening for his friends, yet the evening falling apart in the process. Kind of a mundane main plot for a finale episode. Usually Degrassi finales are full of drama and intensity. They usually end the season with a bang; some major event or situation unravels...causing shock and mayhem. But this season, the drama that occured was somewhat light. And in comparison to some of the other major events that happened this season (abortion, cutting, domestic violence and abuse)...the events in this episode pale in comparison. I expected more and I was a little disappointed in the A plot.
As far as the B plot goes, it was a little more interesting than the main plot, but it seems the Simpson/Sean drama was resolved way too quickly. Simpson forgave Sean more easily than I thought he would. What Sean did was pretty serious...stealing a laptop from his girlfriend's stepfather, who also happens to have cancer. Yet Simpson forgave almost immediately and the tension between them was settled by the end of the episode; wrapped up neatly in a pretty little bow. I wanted to see Sean suffer some real consequences for his actions and I wanted a bigger fallout between Simpson and Sean when Simpson found out what Sean did.
Overall, not a great episode.
