White Wedding Part 1
Spike and Snake's wedding is quickly approaching. Snake is bursting with excitement. Emma is stressed and overwhelmed with all of the planning she has to do as Spike's made of honor. And Spike would love to relish in the joy of her wedding day too, but she's been feeling a little sick lately. As Emma deals with scheduling caterers and making sure the correct wedding cake is delivered, Joey decides to plan Snake the perfect bachelor party...with all the makings of a good one, including a stripper. Snake and Spike's friends (from the original Degrassi High) come into town for the wedding celebration as well. Manny also gets swept up in the excitement of the wedding romance, and takes it upon herself to reunite Emma and Sean, by inviting Sean to the wedding behind Emma's back. When Emma finds out she's outraged, and asks Manny to go back and uninvite him.
The wedding festivities are in full force, but the excitement starts to dwindle when Spike discovers she's pregnant. The news puts everything else on the backburner; (including Emma's hair, which ends up completely ruined). Spike contemplates telling Snake the news about the baby. Snake tells her that with everything on their plate; the wedding, moving in together, as well as Snake becoming Emma's stepfather...he doesn't want babies anytime soon. So Spike decides not to tell him about the pregnancy. She begins to wonder if this is the right time for a baby...or a wedding. She vents to her friends, and Emma, seeking advise and a possible solution. But no one can tell Spike what to do, the decision is ultimately hers. And when she tells Emma that she's contemplating having an abortion, Emma is both socked and apalled...and Spike remains as confused as ever...
In the sub-plot, Toby, JT and Craig try to hire a stripper for Snake's bachelor party.
This was a pretty good episode. Lots of excitement and chaos surrounding Snake and Spike's wedding. It's good seeing old characters like Caitlin and Lucy from the original Degrassi. The news of Spike's pregnancy is big, unfortunately I don't think it's big enough to cause such distress among the characters, namely Spike. She's having a baby with the man she's going to marry. This type of news should be cause for celebration. Yes, the timing could be better. But the timing wasn't exactly convienent when Spike had Emma either, and yet look how well that situation worked out. It seems like Spike is in mourning when she finds out about her pregnancy in this episode...which I think is a bizarre reaction. She's so distressed about it that she actually contemplates calling off the wedding and/or having an abortion. Seems a bit extreme to me. I thought that Spike's reaction to her pregnancy was a little unbelievable and over the top. However, the episode leaves us with a lot of cliffhangers, enough to keep us interested to tune into Part 2...
Overall, an entertaining episode, but not that engrossing. I think the writers were going for intensity and impact with the news of Spike's pregnancy, but I didn't find the news that shocking and I thought that Spike's reaction to the news was overly dramatic. I guess I don't see the big deal here. Snake and Spike have good jobs, a stable home, and they're getting married...so why so much disarray over the news of a baby?
Grade: B-
